Strategies for Implementing Physical Health Education into the Classroom

  • "Ask students to share their physical activity break ideas. As students get comfortable doing physical activity breaks, ask them to lead the activity" (Brain Breaks, Instant Recess and Energizers, n.d.).

  • "Add physical activity breaks to your daily schedule. This helps to ensure you take breaks regularly" (Brain Breaks, Instant Recess and Energizers, n.d.).

"Classroom fitness breaks don't necessarily have to be a break from learning. Integrate physical activity into academic concepts when possible."

  • "Select activities with the ability to modify the body parts used, speed of movement, and number of repetitions. Start at an accessible place for all and make adjustments to challenge students" (Brain Breaks, Instant Recess and Energizers, n.d.).

  • Once a game structure is learned by a class, an infinite number of content topics can be "plugged into" that structure and subsequent variations can be added. (Hruska pg 19)

  • "Tell your students why physical activity throughout the day is necessary. Include them in the discussion" (Brain Breaks, Instant Recess and Energizers, n.d.).

  • "Mobility: Some of the activities may be done from a seated position allowing mobility challenged students to participate with peers or doing similar motions with hands/arms as others are doing with feet legs" (Brain Breaks, Instant Recess and Energizers, n.d.).
